Dugout At Thorn Lane

A dugout, with entrance facing away from the German front line which was 100 metres up the hill at ‘Imperial Trench’. Unusually, these soldiers could stand upright without great risk because the front lines of 1915 were high sand sack walls rather than trenches. Here in the Molenbos, the land also sloped downwards in front of the German lines creating an extensive safe area out of direct line of sight.
