Norfolk Trench

Imperial War Museum Q_50445 – Men of the 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment digging a communication trench from 8th Brigade HQ at Spoilbank to the ‘Norfolk Lodge’ redoubt. The trench became known as ‘Norfolk Trench’.

Map dated 15/11/1915. Photograph taken at the point indicated, with the trees lining the canal bank in the background.

Photograph from 2013 showing the cut through Lock House Bank used to access the trench shown above. This feature survived the disastrous tree-felling activity of 2014 but was considerably widened as the contractors used it as their access point to the spoilbank mound and the bank top and parked their caterpillar digger there at night.
